Another area of my life I’m looking at is what I have been - TopicsExpress

Another area of my life I’m looking at is what I have been telling myself that I think to be a truth but nowhere is it based in fact. These statements can be personal, passed on by others, cultural things and so on. They are called meme’s. I never even heard of that word until about 2 weeks ago and I’m almost 54 years old. Where has that word been all my life? Had I learned about this word earlier in life I might have saved myself some grief. This is a hard one to explain but I will try. A meme is an element of a culture or behavior that may be passed from one individual to another. Examples. Of course I’m a drunk I’m Irish. You can never have enough. Children are expensive to raise in modern society. It runs in the family. It’s not in my nature. I don’t have it in me. It’s in my genes. All these statements are assumptions or presumptions but not based in fact. Just because something is not in my nature doesn’t mean I can’t do it. Just because something is in my gene’s doesn’t mean I’m going to catch something. Just because someone says raising kids are expensive doesn’t make it so. Just because something runs in the family doesn’t mean it’s going to happen to me. A doctor tells me with my back having 2 titanium plates and 7 screws in it I will always have trouble with it. That’s not a true fact. Actually my back has been doing great so who should I believe? The doctor or my own feelings of how my back feels. I choose to believe my back will be good and that my health will be good. Doctor said I’ll never get off of my sleep meds. Says who? You see if I tell myself things long enough I can start believing they’re a fact even when they’re not. Meme’s can be passed on from person to person to person and then be accepted as fact. Most meme’s are based in the negative so who I choose to believe can either be a negative or a positive in my life. I choose to be positive. I am healthy. I can sleep through the night. It doesn’t have to be in my nature to accomplish great things. I promise to stop telling myself anything negative and not to feed into negative stereotyping. I am what I say I am, not what someone else says I am.
