Another fantastic WET school trip! 23 students from Discovery College in Hong Kong spent four days in the Central Vietnamese Highlands. They put in a tremendous effort helping the Co Tu people (one of 54 ethnic minorities in Vietnam) build new toilets; prior to our visit there were only three in the whole village! They faced tough conditions, pick axing into solid rock in extremely hot temperatures for hours each day. On top of this the students also sand papered and then painted the local school building. The students all demonstrated incredible resilience and persevered through their less than comfortable living conditions - 29 of us (all very sore from the tough labour) crammed into the local community hall and slept side by side on the floor on each night. There were no showers so our daily swims at a nearby waterfall were a welcome way to freshen up. On our last day in the village I overheard three girls discussing how grateful they were for the opportunity to give back to those less fortunate and expressed gratitude for their pleasant lifestyle. It was a real eye opener for the children to witness and experience third world living conditions. Needless to say it was a huge success and a lot of fun, we cant wait to get back to the village next year.
