Strong men, strong women, even children of extraordinary character. To me, the joy in reading her books is seeing her characters - even the monstrously flawed and terrifying ones (and she presents some terrifying characters) - through kindly eyes of love. She brings people to life and follows them through gritty, unpleasant, very real conflicts, yet does it with such love and strength that her stories haunt your thoughts long after the last page is turned. Surprisingly complex, she is at her best when her characters are imperfect - like the baby born deaf in a society that openly labeled her as a dummy. Thoughtfully complex, consistently entertaining and a joy to share, Mrs. Littaus books remain at the top of my to give list. I highly recommend all her books - and while I say this is the best one yet, the next one is always even better!
