Another long, long day of grape farming in two southern Arizona - TopicsExpress

Another long, long day of grape farming in two southern Arizona counties. Time to head down the hill to Tucson. Behind me here is our wonderfully pruned Syrah at the Flying Leap Estate Vineyard in Elgin, AZ. These beautiful , healthy Syrah were planted by Tim & Joan Mueller in 2003. Theyre very vigorous vines, so we thin the spurs out a lot and set the plants in a nice configuration for the fast approaching Spring buds. Our entire vineyards in the Kansas Settlement are fully budded out ( except Mourvèdre ), but those vines are at 4,300 feet MSL. Our estate vineyard is much higher - at 5,000 feet, so bud break occurs much later than at our other farms. Our 2013 Estate Syrah was crushed from the fruit harvested from these vines behind me in this photograph - the fruit was picked at a high Brix, was partially raisind and made a really rich, full-bodied red Syrah that is developing incredibly well in our oak barrels. The crushed grape must was so thick & full that it jammed our hearty must pump continuously as we transferred it into the fermentation vessel. Flying Leap is a committed team of Arizona family farmers, all around good dudes & dudettes, bad ass winemakers and trained sommeliers with a great passion for providing our customers with great wine, service and information about our wines.
