Another of our interests was the creation of a lighthouse network. Our esteemed colleague Professor Roland Paxton MBE MSc PhD HonDEng CEng FICE FRSE, has given us notice of his future talk and most interesting book, as follows: The Bell Rock Lighthouse-Achieving the Impossible Professor Roland Paxton, Heriot-Watt University The 115-foot Bell Rock Lighthouse stands on the deadly, generally submerged, Bell Rock reef, eleven miles out to sea; and has withstood the immense force of the waves for over 200 years. Professor Paxton explains how the skills and knowledge of John Rennie and Robert Stevenson and their truly remarkable workforce achieved the impossible: construction of the lighthouse in four working seasons from 1807-10. Copies of Professor Paxton’s latest book “Dynasty of Engineers” will be on sale with profits going to The Northern Lighthouse Heritage Trust.
