Another resolution well be voting at the Alameda County Democratic Party meeting tonight is one supporting the formation of the bicameral commission on issues surrounding recruitment, admissions, and retention in Californias higher education system and the expansion o educational opportunities and access for communities that continue to be underrepresented in our public universities. I wholeheartedly support the idea of creating a commission that can figure out how we can effectively diversify our university student body, so Im planning to vote in favor of the resolution. Straight affirmative action doesnt work: if a student is not qualified to enter into college they wont do well, in particular in classes where theyre graded in a curve. Graduation rates for AA students, when we had AA at Berkeley, was abysmal. But I do believe that we can create programs that diversity our institutions without setting students up for failure. Im hoping that Commission can do so.
