Line & Wash is not only the perfect stepping stone from sketching to painting; it is a highly versatile technique in its own right. It can be executed in materials and strokes that are as light as a butterfly, with pencil and soft touches of watercolours. At the other end of the spectrum, the line work can be applied with strong waterproof inks with accompanying jewel-like watercolour strokes that resemble a stained-glass window. You do not need to be skilled in drawing to start on this journey – be suggestive and the results will surprise you. On the other hand if precision is your preferred method, then you have unlimited tools at your disposal with which to apply the line-work and a repertoire of methods for applying the watercolour. The watercolour can be applied wet-on-dry, or wet-on-wet; or you can combine the two. Don’t hold back, experimentation is the key; both with materials and with techniques – the journey to achieving your own distinct style will give you enormous pleasure. IN THIS DETAILED DEMONSTRATION YOU WILL SEE THE LINE & WASH TECHNIQUE IN WATERCOLOUR applied to the same subject of a boat anchored by a jetty, so that you can compare it to the Wet on Wet and Wet on Dry techniques. Paul Taggart also uses the same, single colour mix for all three exercises, so that you can concentrate on each technique and appreciate their differences, without the distraction of worrying about different colour mixes. TRY THIS APPROACH YOURSELF, CHOOSE A SIMPLE SUBJECT and TAKE YOUR TIME – this is not about proving your worth as a watercolorist; it is about gaining a greater understanding of watercolours, so that you can enhance and enjoy your watercolour painting experience.
