Anti-semitism and Israel - it occurred to me that it is very likely that most non-jews see the Holocaust as, admittedly, a horrible event, but that it is past and is not enough or sufficient to justify a jewish state constructed on palestinian land and when they observe vigorous support for israel by jews, they experience these nationalist expressions as a form of rather ugly ethnocentrism. BUT, in contrast, from the perspective of most jews, the Holocaust, was just one of many events of savage brutality imposed on jews throughout the last two thousand years and thus comes the idea that jews must have a safe haven in the world because of the prevalence of genocide throughout jewish history. This difference in perspective would explain so much of the misunderstandings that surround discussions about the israeli state, its legitimacy, etc. This idea occurred to me last night and I think it has some merit.
