DAY 9 – THE POWER OF JESUS COMMAND You cannot command an emotion, but you can command an action. Understanding the difference between emotion and action [between what you feel and what you do] empowers every relationship you have. How does one love when you don’t feel you have it in you? Suppose you’re thinking I would like to start loving my husband again {wife} or even my kids [friend or colleagues, boss], one might say don’t you think I’ve tried? I just can’t do it. Then Jesus comes along and says, “I command you to love in a new kind of way.” How is this possible? How can Jesus command us to feel love? The fact is, He isn’t! He is commanding us to act with love. You cannot command an emotion out of anyone. You cannot command a child that has just been gifted to be excited about the gift I guess you would even make him cry the more. We may learn to hide this kind of responses as we grow older, but we never outgrow them. You think you have, or can? How about you’ve had a tough day, and someone says, “I insists you be happy.” It doesn’t work I guess, it actually makes you more angry. You cannot command and emotion, but you can command an action when Jesus says, “I command you to love one another” He not saying “feel this way”; he’s saying “act this way,” We do things all the time that we don’t feel like doing. If you woke up in the morning and didn’t feel like going to work, you wouldn’t call and say, “I don’t feel like being at work today, so am not coming. It would be very hypocritical for me to come to work this morning.” No, you go anyway. Do you think Jesus felt like dying on the cross? Of course not. Jesus didn’t face that morning thinking, “I feel like going to the cross today. I feel like experiencing the most excruciating pain, the most anguished disgrace, the most wrenching burden of mankind’s sin.” In fact, the night before His death, He prayed in Gethsemane, “Father, if you’re willing, take this cup from me,” in Jesus prayer, we can see that He did not follow His feelings. Instead, He prayed, “yet not my will, but yours be done” [Luke 22:42]. Are feelings a part of the package of love? Of course, sometimes wonderful, sometimes woeful part! Feelings tend to follow action sometimes quickly sometime slowly. When you begin to act with love again out of an obedient heart, feelings eventually follow. I care!
