Antiseptics-Antimicrobials Summary An antiseptic is a broad term that means anything that kills a wide spectrum of germs including bacteria, viruses and fungi. Sepsis means infection, so an antiseptic is something that inhibits infection. It is usually applied topically, or used to wipe surfaces, rather than taken orally. Antiseptics can also be referred to as antimicrobials, as both terms mean they attack a wide range of disease causing agents. Antimicrobials can be taken orally as well as being applied to the skin and surfaces. Similar terms are antibiotics and antibacterials, however these are substances that specifically target and kill bacteria, or at least inhibit their growth and spread. When antibacterials are taken orally, especially when they are synthetic and/or prescription meds rather than natural products, they are often called antibiotics. Today the catch-all term antimicrobial is often used instead of antibacterial, as understanding has emerged that there are other classes of pathogens apart from bacteria, such as viruses, spores, moulds and fungi.
