Any time the size of a family increases, everything that helps maintain that family has to grow too. The size of the home itself needs to get larger, it takes more clothing for all the family members, more food to feed everyone and even more assets to obtain medical care. The Utah Department of Corrections family is really no different from the typical mom and pop family with a few kids, except there are nearly 7,200 members in the UDC family, and nobody seriously thinks those numbers will decrease anytime soon. In fact, it is quite likely that just the opposite will happen, and we will see the net prison population swell by an estimated 125-150 each year. And every inmate added to the system costs the department $74 a day ($27,000 a year) according to Steve Gehrke, a spokesman for Department of Corrections. Gehrke said the department might reach maximum capacity in about two years, with a projected net of growth of about 12 new inmates a month.
