Anybody ever heard of, or done, any tong tossing with a line - TopicsExpress

Anybody ever heard of, or done, any tong tossing with a line machine? Its an Idaho thing back when there were less safety rules. Bob Highly, I know you know all about it so correct me. Ill never forget when it was explained to me by a cutter from Idaho...we were at Freshwater Bay, AK around 79-80. The way he told it was hilarious with his animated moves and gift of gab. Plus we had a few drinks in us. It involves connecting the mainline drum to the boom, (not sure if there was a block purchase on it or not), which turned it into a live boom that made it fast, up and down. The idea was to get the tongs going round and round, inline with the boom or there abouts, then at the right moment you let the tongs go flying towards your target, which is someone standing on a log a hundred feet or whatever away. It was a highly dangerous technique that resulted in broken windows, tongs landing on the top of the cab, ground man running for his life, etc. They used it for right-of-ways and small corners or what ever. Mustve been where the tong tossing with hydraulics came from. Then there was the 98 or maybe a 108 Linkbelt high walker-high-cab with elevated gantry and a 65ft aladdis boom. This was a right-of-way-reach as far as you can thing. It had a set of 4 point grapples called Cour-de-lane. When loading logs the 4 points grabbed the log with more control. Also good for piling brush.......... Bob Highly, I ran into this shovel, which was Turkey Toms baby, at Windy Bay out of Homer in 90. It showed signs of abuse and neglect but still did what it was designed to do. I was running a 98 linkbelt heel boom and that had showed up at the camp. There wasnt any body that could run it so I got on it and made a lot of adjustments and preceded to have fun with it. I loaded a few trucks with it and it brought me back to Green Lake when Tom was loading out of the decks I made with the 118 Washington....aaahh the memories!
