Anyone who has seen me around town knows that I can often be found - TopicsExpress

Anyone who has seen me around town knows that I can often be found carrying a spiral bound note book. That note book contains a wide variety of information like notes from a school board meeting to my grocery list; from random phone numbers to my home project honey-dos. The note book also contains article ideas. Now that the note book is almost full, I’ll retire this one and find another to use. In the meantime I have snippets of life observations from the note book just for this issue. Decatur has some lovely sidewalks. Yes, I know there are many areas where the sidewalks are still in need of repair, but walking around town can give one a true appreciation for a well-constructed sidewalk plan. The problem with sidewalks in general is how they relate the pedestrian to the fast moving traffic on the street just a few inches away. With downtown Decatur’s elevated sidewalks, the pedestrian feels safely removed from any potential encounters with an ill-aimed car or truck. In the past, the elevated sidewalk has served as a barrier to those who have trouble gaining access to them but the recent installation of ramps and curb-cuts has done much to eliminate that problem. Putting the summer clothes away and breaking out the totes of winter clothing almost feels like Christmas morning. The issue this year, of course, is we didn’t get much notice of the switch in the weather! I had just worked out some cute outfits featuring shorts or skirts and now suddenly I’m wearing long pants and fleece-lined tights. Stay warm out there. Keep reminding ourselves that it is rain, not snow. While ‘experts’ often remind us of the benefits of eating around the family dinner table, I’ve observed certain additional benefits to dining out as a family. The dinner conversation is the same and perhaps even improved. When eating out it is much easier to escape the TV and the pull of other electronics. Everyone gets what they want to eat without mom having to guess what might to an acceptable compromise. And there is no discussion about whose turn it is to do clean-up. In our house, eating out means an escape from ‘eating with an audience’, specifically the patient dogs and cat hoping something will fall to the floor. Like many, eating out won’t ever be a regular habit for this family - our waistline and wallet simply won’t allow it – but is a pleasant treat. I’ve decided my hair isn’t going gray. Instead I have silver highlights. My older sister tried the trick of putting light streaks in her hair to disguise her gray. As time went on, her streaks got wider and more numerous. We joked that she was going prematurely blond. Congratulations to the ECCC basketball teams for their continued success. And congratulations Newton County Academy football for their recent win. They are MAIS Class A district champions and are advancing to state play-offs. Kudos to the Newton County Middle / High School for their recent “jeans day” medical fundraiser in honor of 8th grade science teacher Joy Munn. While not in Decatur, the fire at the Mississippi Agricultural Museum is a devastating blow. Many Mississippi families have fond memories of days spent there. We’re grateful for the many firefighters who responded and the heroes who rescued people and animals. If you’d like to help the museum in their recovery efforts, contact the FFA teachers at the Newton County Career and Technical Center. Michael McIlwain from Dayton, Texas will perform at a gospel singing at Church Arise on Saturday, November 22nd at 6 p.m. All are invited to enjoy his inspirational talent. Clarke-Venable Baptist Church is hosting a combined Thanksgiving service on Sunday 23rd at 6 p.m. Decatur United Methodist Church and Midway Baptist Church have been invited. The ECCC Choir has performances planned for November 30th and December 2nd. Also a “Fine Arts Christmas Spectacular” which will feature all the musical and artistic students at the college is slated for Thursday, December 4th. Please contact the college for details. On Friday, December 5th Decatur will be having their Christmas Parade. The ‘Decatur Dollars’ winner will be announce just prior to the parade. Immediately following the parade, East Central Community College will be hosting a party called “EC Warrior Wonderland … A Christmas Festival”. There will be first, second and third place parade entry winners. Please plan to not park on Broad Street after 4pm (give or take) on that day. A final snippet … Couples that have been married a long time tend to no longer argue – not because they always agree but because they have given up on trying to change each other. There is a very special state of grace in being accepted just the way you are – faults and all. A special thanks goes to my wonderful husband for his constant support and appreciation of me just the way I am. Our Facebook link for the week is the Beulah Hubbard Volunteer Fire Department: facebook/pages/Beulah-Hubbard-Volunteer-Fire-Department/ I know many in Decatur have fond memories of the Beulah Hubbard School on Hickory Little Rock Road and this fire department has done an amazing job of restoring the old cafeteria building. We honor the fine work they do in answering our pleas for help.
