Anyone with common sense knows that if the Government really wanted to fix the system, they could come up with the funds. The problem is mismanagement of tax dollars and hidden greed by this very same Government. The funding is available if the Government would stop spoon feeding the corporations, stop double dipping and cut down on the irresponsible decisions with BC tax payers dollars. I didnt get a choice when they spent millions on a roof (ie. B.C. place), or millions on the big Bollywood extravaganza. Nobody asked me if I would rather spend millions on this or pour it into the broken education system?? We voted for this government to balance this budget. This is not balancing the budget. This is tipping the scales towards the elite, government and corporations. Not to mention the countless other examples. If the roof and Bollywood coming to town was so crucial for the economy of BC why werent the rich corporations responsible for the funding since they are the ones sharing the money with this irresponsible Government? We have plenty of schools to go around and we have plenty of teachers to go around. Cutting the class size down is only a part of the problem, but without extra help in the classrooms this problem clearly will not be solved. Why arent the teachers getting more say about what is needed in their schools, when they are the ones on the battle field? Why are all the decisions being made by people who are so far removed from what is going on in the provinces classrooms? Who ever sees the superintendents of districts actually going into their classrooms and seeing what is really going on? Why is the Board Of Education so hell bent on increasing the power of the individual principals of each school to decide where the limited resources go, and who will get them, when (from what I have learned from those in the trenches) many Principals have little to no experience in Elementary schools ( many arent even familiar with the performance standards for the individual grade levels, let alone the proper assessment resources and procedures that are required.. I understand we have some elementary principals who have taught only in middle/high school for instance and have to start their principal stints in elementary, not having even logged a full year in primary education? Now I know we have some good principals, but we have some irresponsible ones who have the power to dictate all decisions based on student/parent/teacher favoritism when clearly some have no idea what really needs to be done. Im sure we can agree that middle/high school is so much different than elementary. I do know that many principals who face this situation and actually care about doing service to their students do ask for teachers advice but do all of them? We do have some egos right? I see this as a problem. I believe only elementary teachers should become elementary principals and the same for high schools. I think we can also agree that the main concern is elementary, although I know high schools have problems of their own. Children in the elementary ages are at the most crucial years in their development and require the necessary attention to make them ready for middle/high school. I dont understand how the Government thinks that Resource teachers/ EAs spending 45 minutes in a classroom of 30 is helping take away from the tremendous workload put on teachers. EAs, resource teachers and what have you are wonderful if there was enough to go around and stay in a class for longer then 45 minutes. One of my questions is. If children are so important for the future of this Province like everyone claims including the Government then why are we starving the education system to death? Why are we constantly under funding? Why are we overcrowding classrooms to standing room only? How can OUR teachers perform to the best of their abilities under these circumstances? Another of the many questions I have is the fact that we have handfuls of young teachers fresh out of universities waiting for a contract so they can start their career. Most I assume have other jobs while they wait for the opportunity to achieve their goals. These teachers are OUR future educators. Why doesnt the Government solve two problems with one decision? Bring in these young vibrant teachers who are ready and willing to gain actual experience and provide them with hands on knowledge. Prepare the next generation of teachers beforehand, instead of them having to wait their turn. Doing this would also fix the teachers overwhelming duties and take some of the load off them so they can give all children the attention they require and need. These children are OUR future too. The most important asset we have is getting the least attention by this government?? I truly believe if we educate our children to the best of this generations abilities it will only help the economy later on. I also know that if it wasnt for handfuls of parents in each school, the teachers would be in even more peril. They devote time and money with different events and fundraisers, and I know the teachers truly appreciate them because of these facts. Supplies like paper and text books ect should absolutely be funded properly by this government and its not. Why? Again Government (not teachers) have put the children of BC last on the list, because of greed and agendas only they are aware of. Is this a new phenomena? Governments taking advantage of power and authority have been going on for years mostly because the citizens were not aware of it to the extent it was being done. Its 2014 now and we have mass media, the internet and many more sources to find truth and facts about things like Government spending, and we continue to allow for instance a 42% salary increase in the 5 years to the Ministers and government staff right down to the janitors during a Net Zero Policy While they trimmed funding to each of the public sector departments and told all public sector employees there will be no increases in wages in this 5 year window. Why are the people of BC not outraged at this, and the many other irresponsible spending habits? I know the economy is hurting for reasons including these facts. A possible solution to this would be to continue funding the high schools as they are and put main focus on the foundation of student learning-- elementary schools. Send these children into high school fully prepared and ready to tackle the next step. In order for this to happen, we need to put these children in particular FIRST! I know its not just the Liberal Government. Its all three governments cheating and lying to the citizens of Canada in their own particular fashion. They continue to pee on our legs and tell us its raining! Sounds like words from an anarchist? No, Im not an anarchist. I believe in honest government who treat all citizens equally. No favouring. No backdoor deals being made with the rich corporations that have no barring on the little people. Quality health for all and the most important asset we have. The children, the future. Unfortunately I have never seen it. Why?
