One of the most common requests the Joseph Campbell Foundation receives is for Joseph Campbells reading list – the books he assigned in his mythology course at Sarah Lawrence College. Its a lengthy list. Bill Moyers shares a story about receiving a letter from a former student of Campbells who noted that While all of us listened spellbound, we did stagger under the weight of his weekly reading assignments. Eventually, one of her classmates complained, noting that she had other classes, each with assigned reading, and wondered how she was expected to complete the reading for his course every week. Campbells amused response: Im astonished you tried. You have the rest of your life to do the reading. Youll find this list in JCFs online bookstore (powered by Amazon) at the link in the first comment on this post. JCF does receive 5% of the price of books ordered through our online store (and of anything else placed in your cart, book or not, when you start your Amazon shopping experience in our store), but we certainly understand many would prefer to purchase from a brick-and-mortar bookstore or one of Amazons online competitors, or simply visit the local library. Feel free to browse this list first so youll have an idea what titles appeal to you. (Youll also find in JCFs online store not only all of Joseph Campbells titles, but also books by scholars who influenced Campbell, authors Campbell cited, contemporary contributions to the field of mythology aimed at general and academic audiences, and much more. The menu on the right of each page lists 20 separate categories—Sacred Voices, Shapers of the Field, etc.—many with multiple subcategories [e.g. Ritual Studies, Feminine Images in Myth, Shamanism, and more, collected under the broad category of Contemporary Voices]. Youll find a description of what each main category contains at the top of its page).
