Arabic word of the day: Koshary كشري English equivalent word: Koshary Chinese equivalent word: 库沙里 Ku sha li (That is merely a sound interpretation of the word Koshary, the meaning of each symbol has nothing to do with the over all meaning of the word) Cultural explanation: Koshary is an authentic and rather delicious Egyptian meal that was originally first made by Saint Joseph/Prophet Joseph who ruled Egypt some when in the early 3rd millennium B.C. King Joseph came up with the Koshary meal idea to avoid wasting any crops left overs that were all gathered in certain gathering points then distributed to different parts of the Egyptian kingdom. King Joseph single handedly managed to turn Egypt from a deteriorating kingdom that was suffering from drought, starvation and poverty into a prosperous strong empire that extended from central Africa in the South to what is now known as Syria up North. He managed to do so using very simple practical ideas and techniques that involved all aspects of life, and yes, Koshary was one of those ideas. He literally saved Egypt in every way a country can be saved and to think that he wasnt Egyptian shows the amount of love and loyalty even a foreigner can develop towards Egypt. The Koshary ingredients varied over the different ages. Modern Koshary ingredients are: Rice, onion, tomatoe sauce or slices, humus, lentils and macaroni. Koshary is a relatively cheap meal that costs 5-10 EGP, considering that the USD is currently selling for 6.95 EGP (7.34 EGP in the black market) so yeah, when you do the math you will find it a fairly cheap meal. If you are visiting Egypt for a week or two, or staying over for an extended period of time then trying this local delicacy is very preferable.
