Are Leaders Born, Manufactured or Trained? I was interviewing an MBA who had just resigned from a Multi national companys top post in spite of a very good salary. He reasoned that life is too difficult in marketing with goals set as high as Mount Everest and people are measured by their ability to bring in business. Leaders are trained to squeezed out lot of work from the juniors albeit politely. The same formula is being applied everywhere. Observe your childs performance in school and you will notice that if he is brilliant you still want him to get higher grades so his social life will be cut off, he will be put under the care of more experienced private teachers TO GET MORE MARKS. If he gets A then you will be wanting A+. Most of us are victims of many best selling authors of the marketing world. This is true that some of these authors are very successful in their respective profession while many of them have raised real good points. But this does not give us a licence to handover our own analytical skills to them and take them blindly, for example the quest of leadership in the corporate world. We must realize that these books are to cater the need of surviving cut throat marketing especially during economic turmoil. So some times they lead to aggressive marketing by setting up very high goals and the success of a leader is measure by the parameter of how much money he was able to generate through sales. My American friend Claude, who is a terribly polite salesman tells me that we Americans cannot survive if we dont sell. In one way or other we are all leaders of our own families, and our own selves too. If you are a teacher then you are a leader of your class and if you are a mother then you are a leader of the house in the absence of your husband. We are all successful in leadership in some way or others. If you observe closely , you will gladly discover some very good qualities that each one of us posses as a leader which is very unique from others. Most of the class teachers are aware of their students educational as well as social functioning. How is a teacher able to manage a class of a variety of 50 to 60 students, each different in habits and each with some or other flaws. How does she manage to keep a class quite and listen to her for an hour? People cant manage their own children even if less in numbers but a school teacher is an excellent baby sitter for six hours a day, 200 days a year. She is a leader in her own way. What makes a mother a successful Financial leader and a manager better than many HRs of her house in the absence of her husband? In fact a woman supersedes many of the household decisions too. How does she manage with the little income that her husband brings home, at times irregularly? From where does she get the skill to pursue her children day and night to go to bed early or eat food that they dont like without participating in any workshops of convincing customers? Leaders cannot be manufactured nor are they born, but they need to be trained. Every Prophet was a leader for his community and Allah got them trained in Creed, values and tolerance through hardships and challenges. Prophet Mohammed, peace be upon him, survived poverty, personal loss, battles and yet left behind a batch of best students to carry on his legacy. It is the facing and tackling of the real problems in life that makes a person good leader and if he or she applies Islamic values then it give a better shine to his or her performance. Leadership is not only about dragging people to fulfill your own ambitions but to set an example that they love to follow. As the Quran sums up: Can there be a better outcome of Excellence than Excellence? ( Surah Rahman) Author Nisaar Nadiadwala speaks and writes on Islamic values.
