Are Video Games Good for You? Imagine all the hours you’ve spent playing video games – or if not you then someone you know – now what if all that time was actually spent building your sensorimotor skills? A recent report from the University of Toronto psychology department claims that people who play action games seem to learn new sensorimotor skills more quickly than those who don’t. “Sensorimotor” is a mashup of “sense” and “motor”, thus it’s a motor response to a sensory input. You see the orange light, you put your foot on the brake, simple as that! Experts in every field love making up impressive words; it makes them seem more mysterious and – well – expert! Some examples of sensorimotor skills are learning to ride a bike, drive a car, or type a letter. The visual input comes first, then the motor response. But if you had a profession like surgeon or test pilot, these skills become even more important, since speed in learning is of the essence. That’s where the game players shine. U of T researchers set up an experiment in which participants were asked to keep a small green square cursor at the center of a white square moving target. The pattern of the white square’s movement repeated over time. Though the gamers and non-gamers started out with about the same scores, the action game players picked up on the pattern of repetition faster, and so scored higher over time. Researchers concluded that one of the benefits of playing such games might be an enhanced ability to learn the dynamics of new sensorimotor tasks. This makes the best excuse ever for Call of Duty fanatics: “I’m practicing to be a brain surgeon!” To which your answer as a parent might be: “Your marks are low, you never leave the house, but your sensorimotor skills are fabulous!” Your Flooring Consultant For Life, Craig Bendele President of Bendele Abbey Flooring & Rug P.S.
