Are You Creative? What a voice! Last night I was privileged to hear a young lady sing. Her vibrato was truly old school ... her song, in German. My granddaughter Arianna accompanied her on the Clarinet. The young lady, a true talent, gifted by God. Arianna, of course, is a gifted musician, mastering her instrument. Speaking of gifting ... there is a noticeable difference between gifting and study. Study isnt gifting. Study is learning the art ... gifted is to create the artistic piece as well as interpret. There are many forms and styles of art. Learning the art doesnt make one the artist. Learning someones art piece is called interpretation. Creating an original is done by an artist. Some are so enthralled with the learning they never release their creativity … they learn to emulate. They only fall in line of imitating another artist – perhaps adding, or giving it a twist of their own interpretation. Learning someone’s art can be difficult. Especially if it is far beyond what’s popular. We train our ears and eyes in accordance with our environment. Today’s environment isn’t always conducive to intellectual challenging sounds and sights. People tend to blend rather than depart from the masses. The masses flow with the latest fads; with media promotion; with peer pressure; with something that brings a sudden spurt of departure from the ‘norm.’ How bout what lasts? Speaking of which, the piece which I mentioned in the beginning is called Der Hirt auf dem Felsen. The Shepherd on the Rock German … writing by Franz Schubert. He was short lived. Born: January 31, 1797, Alsergrund, Vienna, Austria Died: November 19, 1828, Vienna, Austria. Yet, His piece is STILL VERY POPULAR. “The Shepherd on the Rock.” Beautiful love story worth reading about, learning and performing. So much history to enhance our dark, loud, bland and sometimes inefficient artistry today. Study to be a ‘real’ artist. Create don’t just imitate. What do you hear thats never been written or heard before? Make it a beautiful expression of how you see the world. barbara’annie’beyer ©
