Are standing desks really better for your body? There seems to - TopicsExpress

Are standing desks really better for your body? There seems to be a craze around standing to work at your computer over sitting. We know sitting is bad for us. Studies have shown that when sitting, certain postural muscles become inactive, decreasing the amount of enzymes formed and increasing blood cholesterol levels. Not to mention the postural issues...tight quads and hip flexors, lower back pain, computer neck, rolled forward shoulders.... It seems logical that standing would be healthier than sitting. But is it? As I type this, Im at a coffee shop with standing desk height tables watching a young gentleman type at his computer while standing. He has all of his weight on his right foot with his left kicked out in front and twisted outward. His hips are popped out to the right, twisting his spine and making his left shoulder higher than is right, ultimately causing the tissue in his neck to twist up like a tootsie roll wrapper. So, no. Standing desks are not better than sitting desks. It is not the task were doing that is the problem, its how were doing it. Pay attention to your patterns - how youre doing what youre doing - and eliminate the downsides of virtually every activity.
