Are the work emails of public employees public documents, therefor subject to public records laws? Apparently, the answer is, that depends. There are roughly 14 states whose government emails are either not considered public records, or whose laws on public access to emails are unclear. The result is that information which may later be deemed essential may or may not be available any longer. There are a multitude of reasons why email policies have been crafted the way they are in various locations, but lack of means or resources shouldnt be one of those reasons.
