Are you firing up the BBQ this long weekend? Did you know that in the last three months of the year, the average number of fires caused by barbecues increases by 55%? If your BBQ has been in hibernation over winter, make sure your BBQ is in good working order before you turn it on. Check gas cylinders for rust or damage - replace cylinders that are damaged. Make sure connections are clear and connected properly. Always clean the fat and oils from the cooking tray and trays underneath the barbecue before each use Never put flammable liquid on to a barbecue If a gas leak occurs, and it is safe to do so, shut off the cylinder immediately and allow any gas to disperse Make sure the gas is turned off at the cylinder after use Always supervise children around barbecues. If a fire does occur and you dont feel confident you can put it out, call Triple Zero (000) from a safe place.
