Artwork submission by Hong Kong artists Sampson Wong and Jason Lam with their already famous Add Oil Machine from the Umbrella Occupy HK movement - thank you, we are strong supporters of what you are doing! Medium:1) 1x mac-mini with customized program 2) 1x short-throw projector with estimated projection size (2.5m x 1.8m) 3) 4x LED matrix panel (1.6m x 0.4m) 4) 1x video player with screen for documentary video playback. By sending supportive messages out of the occupied zones in Hong Kong’s Umbrella Movement to the occupiers within, “Add Oil Machine” provides emotional support for a major civil disobedience movement unprecedented in the history of Hong Kong, a liberal society situated at the periphery of an authoritarian superpower where the people are struggling to fight for their civil and political rights. It is created with a belief that pursuit for democracy and liberties are universal values that transcend ethnic and geographical barriers. We have received many messages from Egypt, Turkey and especially China where people live behind the online Great Fire Wall. The idea of translating solidarity from the virtual/ digital global public sphere to the physical, actual and becoming public sphere on streets to facilitate public deliberation has been the underlying concept of the add oil machine. Having various artivist media projects involving projections and participation in mind (such as 99% batsignal and overpass light brigade in the US), Stand By You: add oil machine for the umbrella movement was created. The phrase add oil means stay strong, a direct translation of a Cantonese phrase most commonly used in dialogues for people to express their supportive gestures and to cheer for others. Two months before the Umbrella Movement emerged in late September 2014 in Hong Kong, we have already foreseen that an occupy movement is going to take place as the crowd has been keen on fighting for real democracy in Hong Kong. The Add Oil Machine began operating on September 29, 2014, a day after tear gas was fired against peaceful protesters. Since then we have collected over 40000 messages from across all continents, and we carry them to occupied zones every evening (except for rainy days) for projection. This means that the Add Oil Machine has been exhibited for over 40 days, and still counting. Add Oil Machine will stay till the last day of the Umbrella Movement to exemplify the resilience and persistence of Hong Kong people. Please see the video of our work: https://vimeo/109633878
