Drs. Laura Gonzalez, Erik Hines, DiAnne Borders (CED), and Ericka Gonzalez from the Office of Leadership and Service Learning, have received funding from GEAR UP to conduct a leadership camp for 30 rising 8th graders during Summer 2014. GEAR UP serves school districts with high financial need and seeks to create a college-going environment for students regardless of their backgrounds or resources. The UNCG camp will have a social justice theme, including visits to the Civil Rights Museum in downtown Greensboro, and speakers from Guilford College, NC A&T, and UNCG who will describe examples of leadership in the civil rights movement. In addition, the camp will incorporate college access and college readiness activities for the students as well as a workshop for their parents on the last day of the camp. Campers will create a vision board as part of their activities. Thus, the faculty will need LOTS of magazines for the students to use, especially magazines with lots of pictures and colors. If you have magazines to donate, please put them in the box labeled UNCG GEAR UP CAMP in the mailroom. The faculty will collect magazines beginning now through early June.
