As I made my neighborhood watch patrol, I noticed new houses, mobile homes, home shops, and home offices spouting up in our beautiful forested, agricultural, and wildlife community. Settlers continue to pour into the Almeria--Still X Roads area in numbers not seen since the Creek Indians ceded their lands in the 1830s. Most of these settlers have Bullock County roots or other rural backgrounds. They love animals and want to have horses, cows, goats, dogs, cats and other critters. The settlers want to hunt and fish, too. They have opted not to form a municipal government and will rely on the services the County provides. They want to avoid a town government and planning commission with meddlesome power which could intrude on their free spirited lifestyle. The County is prohibited by state law from being too meddlesome. The folks want a functional County government that does its job but leaves the citizens alone. They want businesses that create jobs that fit in with the community culture. (yes, town folks; rural communities HAVE culture.) With the New Unit System in Bullock County, The roads should be improved and safer. Commissioner McGowen and Commissioner Ellis now have time to lobby and search for more money for our roads, and other improvements. They will, also, work on more business recruitment, and economic development.
