As I visited my mother today with my head on her tired shoulder, I - TopicsExpress

As I visited my mother today with my head on her tired shoulder, I thought she was sleeping. She put one hand on my face, her other arm around me and said I love you Vickie. I wanted to stay there forever. She mostly slept as I sat by her side but would wake up to tell me about her parents, her brothers, her sisters (all deceased). She asked me to hold her hand, feed her some Jell-O, and give her some water. As she would seem to be sleeping I would silently look at her beautiful face, and think of all the times in my life she has prayed for me, talked to me, encouraged me, gave me advice, etc. I looked at the hand I was holding, once strong and firm – now small and frail. I was thinking about how much I love her and how thankful I am she is my mother, when suddenly; she opened her eyes and said, “God just told me I was going to live to be 90. I think I’ll live to be 93.” I saw that twinkle in her eyes as she laughed and said, “I’m only 84 now and I think I’m ready to get out of this place. If I had a car I would get in it and drive to wherever I wanted to go, and I would go and help you take care of those babies.” Then she dosed again. That is my mama – always thinking about how she can help her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Many times, I have heard that as we get older we turn into our mothers – I can only say – I sure hope I do. Her love, her humor, and the generosity she has always had for others is the kind of person I want to be
