As I walk up to the desk to hand in my ID, I feel the anticipation of seeing you swell up in my chest. The short, long walk, to the Gold unit seems to take forever. Oh, I see you...standing at the nurses station telling one of your infamous stories. As we are let in the locked doors, I suddenly feel your urgency; your need to want to leave. I get it! I felt that, today. As one of the nurses announces our arrival, I hear you say....I know who it is! Its my wife. The words I long to hear everyday, seemed to be louder than usual; saying it with joy in your voice. Then, the switch; that change suddenly hit. How quickly your memories come.....and GO! We took you outside today and listened as you explained about the sharks in the pond; about how we couldnt get over there because no one was there to let us in. The anxiety and agitation in your voice, in your body language, began to take over your original calmness. So, we head back inside. You were hesitating to walk down that hallway to your room. I knew there would be several stops along the way; turning around to make sure we were the only ones headed in that direction. As we reached your room, you became upset; saying that you didnt know what was going on; that your speech was not right; that you cant talk right. Oh honey, its happening more than you realize but, I joke that the milkshake must have been spiked. I finally convince you to lay down on the bed, making room for me. As I slip beside you, I feel the anxiousness and anxiety begin to leave your body. Your voice becomes tender and quiet. As you close your eyes, you grab my hand.....I can still feel your cold fingers wrapped around mine. Yet, the warmth from your heart went through me as we lay there. Rest my love! We will have another first tomorrow. I love you!
