As I was preparing for our (the hospitals) participation in the trick or treating event in downtown Clayton this afternoon, it occurred to me how grateful I am to have grown up in a time when Halloween was just a simple holiday that children enjoyed. I was always so excited to choose a costume, go out with my mom and see our neighbors, and then to return home to find out what goodies were in my bag. My children were fortunate enough to experience that same innocent fun when they were growing up in my hometown as well. No one demonized the holiday, nothing was thought of a child dressed in a witches costume - I wore one myself about age 6, and fun was had by all. One of the churches in our little town would pull a trailer behind a pickup truck, and the kids would ride on the trailer to go to each house to trick or treat. No one was offended, no one talked of Satanic worship - simple times, simple fun. I wish for my grandchildren that same opportunity that myself and my own kids enjoyed - a safe, happy time dressing up in a silly costume, being with family and friends, seeing neighbors and enjoying a little candy along the way.
