As Ramadan approaches again, can we at least remember why it is - TopicsExpress

As Ramadan approaches again, can we at least remember why it is such an important month for us and why we fast in that month? All of us say we fast because Allah made it obligatory for us to fast in Ramadan. What most of us do not ponder on is that Ramadan is not meant for us to feel as if we accomplished a feat of tenacity just because we were abstaining from enjoying food and certain conjugal rights with our spouse for a considerable part of each day for one whole month. What most of us only vaguely remember, if at all, is that fasting in Ramadan is prescribed so that we may have taqwa or be more God-fearing. We are supposed to excercise self-control, weaken the hold of our baser worldly desires, increase acts of worship pf Allah and be more acutely aware of Him. We are supposed to feel what it means to be hungry, to having to go without food despite the food being out there, similar to the situation of the millions of fellow humans who are dying of hunger despite the abundance of food in the world around them. Yet, sadly, we have no time to spare to remember them or to remember Allah, since our Ramadan gets overwhelmed with the endless entertainment, never mind halal or haram, and the hsyterical preparation of mountains of food for iftar that are thrown into dustbins and/or eaten till we feel/fall sick . Is it not yet time to return to Islam and find purpose in our acts of worship rather than mechanically fulfilling them as if to throw off a burden off our backs? May Allah guide us, and may He ease the suffering of the millions of humanity suffering from starvation. May Allah help us to help them somehow. Aameen.
