As a BrownParent2016, I stand in solidarity with the students. This wasnt an open exchange of ideas, rather it was a storied institution lending its name, reputation and privilege to someone who did not deserve it while marginalizing the very people victimized by this person. As this blogger notes: Lets do a thought experiment: imagine if Kelly commanded a police force known for strip-searches of young white women. Imagine if said police force had spied routinely on city synagogues, with no cause. Imagine if this police force under Kellys command had entered a public park full of concertgoers listening to the Philharmonic and dispersed the crowd violently. All of these hypotheticals seem absurd; had Kelly done any of these things, he would be jobless and an outcast. It might be good to follow the insight by Lance Corporal Dawson at the end of A Few Good Men. When the other marine says We didnt do anything wrong and Dawson says Yeah, we did. We were supposed to fight for the people who couldnt fight for themselves. We were supposed to fight for Willie. Well Brown, you are supposed to fight for the constitutional rights of marginalized peoples and not give further power and prestige to those who deny constitutional rights and marginalize their fellow citizens based on ethnicity.
