As a landlord I say---turn the free faucet off!!! And turn it off - TopicsExpress

As a landlord I say---turn the free faucet off!!! And turn it off immediately. I do not understand why people think water is free. If you want free water then go fish it out of the Detroit river and take all you can carry home with you!! The City will not put the water in the name of the current resident but rather the property owner so the cause of the situation where more than 1/2 of the residents are delinquent on water bills is because there lacks responsibly for the cost. The housing crisis added to this ever mounting issue because several properties are now investments rather than personal dwellings. It is a challenge as a landlord to evict someone for a mounting water bill when you actually get rent every month. I was stuck with the bill when my tenants of 2 years (who required an eviction) chose not to pay the water. And in most instances taking their deposit is not an option because it is most likely already spent on something else that they chose not to pay... Such as the last months rent before moving..my experience of being stuck with the water bill is not isolated. For a City that is cash strapped as such drastic measures need to be taken. I am proud that someone decided to use their common sense to make a bold financial correction. As far as the UN stepping in..I think this is the most foolish argument ever!.. The City is not restricting ones right to water.. You can go to any public place and have access to water you can carry with you... The City is restricting the luxury of water to your home for free...this is a service and like any other service it comes at a cost. I do no believe that anyone in the City will die over the inability to have running water in the home but rather will be forced to assume responsibility for managing their finances to live within their means. Not everyone that is delinquent cant afford to pay the bill... But moreso choose to not pay the bill because there are no repercussions or mandates to require payment for services. To me this is a tremendous leap forward in the City to remove peoples sense of entitlement to something for nothing! Thoughts??...
