As a light-skinned person, the pain is augmented by being aware of how in the context of American slavery, lighter skin was the product of a very evil transaction between White slaveholders and enslaved Black women. Colorism in the diaspora is the baby of colonialism, raised in the U.S, the Caribbean, Brazil, and many other places.
