As ahead of his time was the bass sound of John Entwistle? He was considered the first rock bass virtuoso and visionary of the instrument, He couldnt to produce the sound that had hear in his head until the second decade of the Who and until the equipment (and engineers) begin to understand your ideas. Until then, Entwistle had done the first bass solo at a rock hit (My Generation from 1965). Developed with strings from type roundwound with Rotosound, John has introduced the concept of double amplification. Finally, his revolutionary technique and his sound concepts were heard in all its magnitude in the Who Are You album, from 1978. This album included the bass played with the fingers and reeded, chord play, beats and snapped strings, harmonics, claws-of-crab (the 8th played with the thumb and forefinger) and his technique of typewriter that was a kinda the predecessor of the tapping, in which he strikes the strings in necks base with four tips of the right hand fingers - all with a tone of bright treble, creamy midrange and bass loud as a piano. Chris Squire, Geddy Lee and Billy Sheehan are among the countless bass players who was influenced by the heritage of Entwistle. In the cover story of American Bass Player Magazine from September 2002, we remember what Entwistle - who died in June of that year - told to Guitar Player magazine in 1989: Id never considered myself a high-level bassist, I always played bass as a guitar imitating.. I played with records of Eddie Cochran , Gene Vincent, the Ventures and the Shadows, especially Duane Eddy. His guitar had the sound I wanted to extract from my bass.
