As an Optician I am asked this question quite often, I have done some research into this subject and have not really had a direct answer. The way I see it is that buying Single vision glasses should not be much of a problem, some sites allow you to upload your own picture and then try glasses on virtually . Most optometrist and Dr,s will supply you with A PD which is needed to determine the optical centers on your glasses. The question I have is just how accurate is a bifocal lens ordered online, without you sitting there being properly measured. Especially with progressive ( no Line ) glasses were millimeters can make all the difference. You see frame,s do not sit the same way on everybody, some may sit higher , some lower depending on the bridge fit of the frames, and the person face structure. When I contacted a couple of the company,s that sell bifocal,s & progressive online I was told that they figure it out with a computerized measurement from your PD. This really does not make much sense to me when the PD really has nothing to do with segment height when it comes to no line progressive lenses that have three area,s of vision basically distance, Intermediate,& reading, the measurements have to be properly taken standing and sitting. I was actually told by one person to look in a mirror and measure yourself (Scary) . My conclusion on this subject is not really a conclusion at all as I still have not found someone to answer my questions . So what should you do? My suggestion is to ask lots of questions when ordering any kind of bifocal,s online. And make sure the questions are answered properly , If I come up with a answer to this problem I will let you know meanwhile you can always send them back till you get them right.
