As an agnostic to this topic trying to make earnest sense of things (which is why I joined this lively discussion group)... heres something Im REALLY struggling with, and someone PLEASE help me understand... The media states that 97% of climate scientists agree that global warming is due to man-made CO2 emissions aka anthropogenic global warming AGW. Ive heard this 97% emphatically (and even condescendingly) stated from President Obama; Ive heard it from Secretary John Kerry, Ive even heard it on the Jon Stewart and Colbert Report show. Ive never actually heard it coming from an actual academic climate scientist. Clearly on this discussion group, and in others Ive followed there is not 97% consensus..not even close..My own research of the topic produced this paper as the ACTUAL source of the famous 97%: iopscience.iop.org/1748-9326/8/2/024024 This paper clearly states, and I quote the abstract: the scientific consensus on anthropogenic global warming (AGW) in the peer-reviewed scientific literature, examining 11944 climate abstracts from 1991–2011 matching the topics global climate change or global warming. We find that 66.4% of abstracts expressed no position on AGW, 32.6% endorsed AGW, 0.7% rejected AGW and 0.3% were uncertain about the cause of global warming. Among abstracts expressing a position on AGW, 97.1% endorsed the consensus position that humans are causing global warming. As far as I can tell the 97% is a misleading statement. IT IS ACTUALLY 97% OF THOSE SCIENTISTS THAT TOOK A POSITION ON AGW, WHICH IS 97% OF THE PERCENT THAT TOOK A POSITION (i.e 32.6% +0.7% +0.3%)....Hmmmm...Someone please clarify. thanks.
