As an athlete- especially one living at the United States Olympic Training Center/Colorado Springs,CO- I can absolutely identify with a lot of the issues presented in this article. While we may not have individual sticks of gum presented to us, we may as well have it. ESPN and Universal Sports are constantly on; the only thing athletes have to do each day is eat, train, eat, sleep, train, eat, and repeat. This is what produces successful, highly specific athletes with skills that translate to nothing in the real world but translate to medals on the field of play. It is the life that we have chosen to pursue This is not to say anything against the OTC or elite sports but rather to try and illustrate how laser focused it can get. Some athletes love it and thrive, others- like myself- struggle with it and go looking for news, for outside information, for mental stimulation. Does that make those os us who pursue outside interests lesser athletes? I dont think so but we are definitely in the minority. Now, grab a stick of gum and enjoy the article below. mobile.nytimes/2014/10/19/opinion/sunday/the-boys-in-the-clubhouse.html?referrer&_r=0
