As an ex-Radio Caroline jock, Im sad to see such a shambolic and bitter end to the recent 50th anniversary celebrations. Now it seems, my great friend Tony Prince (of all people) is getting it in the neck due to this letter from the boss of the current incarnation of Caroline. Most of you wont know this but the chap who runs the station now has been involved for a very long time but thankfully I only had to deal with him once. After I announced I was leaving the ship for The BBC World Service and then Radio Luxembourg my name became mud on The Ross Revenge apparently, although I dont ever recall him venting his spleen to my face. Having said all that, it appears hes done a lot of good to keep the station on air all these years but frankly, his level of hypocrisy beggars belief! He just doesnt seem (or most likely, refuses) to grasp that any positive mention for Radio Caroline is (obviously) great publicity. It seems, leaving the station and having a successful mainstream career on high profile stations to earn...dare I say it...MONEY means for the vast majority of us becoming black sheep of the family!! Personally, I couldnt care less BUT showing total disrespect to many past jocks (some being well known industry names) who continue to keep the stations name in print lacks class, is petty, small minded, hugely arrogant and will always be an eternal achilles heel in terms of Caroline ever being taken seriously outside of its anorak bubble. Although, I do agree that this Caroline North project should have got on board with the Internet Radio Caroline. Maybe if it had, the disastrous start its apparently made to its month long transmissions could have been avoided somewhat!!!?
