As commissioning approaches for 2014, I have had time to reflect - TopicsExpress

As commissioning approaches for 2014, I have had time to reflect on the role and place of covenant within The Salvation Army. Much is made of this covenant but I think we need to place it in perspective. The officers covenant is a promise made between the officer and God which involves The Salvation Army. But what happens when one party pulls the plug and it is not the officer??? There are many reasons an officer may leave ministry and many ways it can be done. For years I have seen published the resignation of officers and have always considered it was the officer that walked away from their covenant (a very judgemental point of view I know). Yet I now know this may not have been the case when after being terminated because of my ill health I found my name published in the Pipeline on a list of resignations. It is not ok to say that every officer who leaves the ministry has resigned. To some I may appear to be pedantic for challenging this use of the word resign but by definition to resign is to leave voluntarily. This I did not do and I believe it implies that I was the one who walked away from my covenant. I did not. To the leadership of The Salvation Army, please stop saying that every officer leaves, leaves voluntarily, it is not true, find a different way to word your announcements and show a little integrity and take responsibility for your actions.
