As described in this piece, we need more middle class housing, but the solutions the author offers - a number of which I agree with - dont address the fundamental reasons for exploding housing prices. Despite the claim by some housing activists to the contrary, the law of supply and demand applies even for housing in our city. We stopped building significant housing 50 years ago and now that our population is growing quickly, we are paying the price. When your population grows by 75,000 and you add very little new housing, is it surprising that prices have exploded? Any solution must address that structural imbalance.
