As is often the case with proponents of Charter Schools, the information provided to the teachers is a bit disingenuous. The lawsuit in no way prevents the state from funding the Key Academy. Instead, the lawsuit simply requests that the Department of Education adhere to the Louisiana Constitution in funding the school. It cannot legally be funded through the Minimum Foundation Program, if the actual wording of the Constitution is upheld by the courts. If you remember, the courts ruled that the state voucher program was also illegally funded through the Minimum Foundation Program. Although that is the focus of this particular lawsuit by the Louisiana Association of Educators, it is worth noting that ANY charter schools cause extreme fiscal damage to local school systems, something the charter operators would prefer that the general public, and the legislators, NOT understand or talk ab out. To see how this happens, read bit.ly/ChartersCost2Much and you will perhaps better understand WHY there are many of us fighting the growth of charter schools, which negatively impact hundreds of thousands of students in our local public schools.
