As many of us struggle with how to digest Dylan Farrows extremely disturbing letter of molestation (along with Allens re-declaration of innocence), understandably some may not be interested in attending M4Ms upcoming 25th Anniversary 35mm screening of CRiMES AND MiSDEMEANORS (1989) on Friday, February 21st at The Castro Theatre. In fact, for the past twenty years many folks have avoided Woody Allens movies as well as other controversial personas works and I respect that choice wholeheartedly. To be perfectly clear, this screening is not to suggest that either Woody Allen or Mia Farrow is innocent or guilty of the charges leveled against them. CRiMES AND MiSDEMEANORS, and indeed most of the films Woody Allen made with Mia Farrow, are important movies. To censor or pretend that they do not exist because we may find someone questionable or worse, would be erasing the phenomenal performances by both as well as Martin Landau, Alan Alda, the real life psychiatrist Martin S. Bergmann (who just passed away three weeks ago at the age of 101! R.I.P.) along with Sven Nykvists haunting camerawork. Questioning cinematic figures based on their work and/or life has and will always be a choice for every audience member. Roman Polanski, Elia Kazan, Alfred Hitchcock and Roscoe Fatty Arbuckle have all posed debatable and confusing artistic dilemmas for the movie-going public. And by choosing to experience the actual product one can fully engage in those difficult discussions. This is what MiDNiTES FOR MANiACS has always been all about with the evening beginning on a lighter note and ending on an even darker one. https://facebook/events/1453665858195023/?ref=3&ref_newsfeed_story_type=regular
