As many of you know, l am a Freemason, and a proud one at that. A conversation I had tonight, and some terrible news I just received has reminded me of a passage from the Masonic burial service which I have had the saddening honor of reciting a few times: May we, who survive him, anticipate our approaching fate and be more strongly cemented in the ties of union and friendship; that during the short space allotted to our present existence, we may wisely and usefully employ our time, and in the reciprocal intercourse of kind and acts, mutually promote the happiness and welfare of each other. Our time on this earth is shorter than we think. Let us do the best we can to treat each other well, and treat each day as it could be our last, because you never know when it will be your last.
