As publisher of The Grip, the following is a letter I have just emailed to Griffin City Manager Kenny Smith, all seven members of the Griffin Board of Commissioners including Joanne Todd, Dick Morrow, Doug Hollberg, Rodney McCord, Cora Flowers, Cynthia Reid-Ward and Ryan McLemore, Griffin Citizen Engagement Specialist Alvin Huff and a number of local business people who also will be directly impacted by the citys decision to place itself in direct competition with both The Grip and other media and marketing outlets. I am compelled to reach out tonight and let you know how incredibly disappointing it was to learn that the city of Griffin has chosen to directly compete with several local businesses by seeking advertisements for its planned quarterly publication. I have personally invested a significant amount of time and effort in helping Alvin Huff obtain printing quotes, as well as information regarding printing options and pagination costs. I did this after having been assured TWICE that these publications WOULD NOT be advertising supported. I was quite shocked at tonights Board of Commissioners meeting when I learned that it will, in fact, be just that. In a lengthy conversation with Alvin Huff following the meeting, I was assured there was no deliberate attempt to deceive me, but the facts remain the same - the assurances I was previously given were false. Its very discouraging to know that while officials tout the desire for local businesses to locate and thrive in the city of Griffin, a number of small businesses will now be in direct competition for marketing dollars. While I can speak only for myself, you must know that your actions have the clear potential to negatively impact not only The Grip, but also the Kitchen Drawer, the Griffin Daily News, Brooks and Company Magazine, the Deal Tracker, WKEU and Promo Vision. I wholeheartedly oppose the citys plan to move forward with this endeavor and am highly disappointed that the potential revenue loss to local businesses that have chosen to operate in Griffin is of no consequence to you.
