As some already know, since I am an active member of Community Rights Lane County, I received a scholarship to attend a life changing event here in town this weekend known as Democracy School (DS). DS was created by The Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (CELDF), a non-profit, public interest law firm providing the tools and resources fueling the quickly spreading Community Rights Movement. CELDF act as principal advisor to activists, community groups, and local bodies of government seeking to address corporate threats to their local environment, agriculture, economy, and quality of life by providing free and affordable legal services, and assistance with grassroots organizing, public education and outreach. CELDF and the Community Rights Movement have finally discovered effective organizing tactics that have proved successful in protecting communities from corporate practices such as fracking, factory farming, mining, water extraction and more that are currently illegal to interfere with under our system of state and federal law, regardless of the proven harm such practices cause to the surrounding land and people living on it. The success is a direct result of CELDF and communities working together to draft and pass legally binding laws on the local level that confront and directly defy the unjust state and federal laws that protect corporate rights to commerce and profit over the rights of people and the land they live on to be healthy and safe.
