As we head towards a new year this documentary is food for thought. Already in our industry (public transport) university graduates are being forced to fill part jobs, replacing older full time workers. As technology takes the place of all kinds of work less people need to be employed. While this doco is made in Canada it provides a good description of the problem - but not the solution. If we want to remove jobs from the economy with new technology, the extra surplus value (profit) created needs to be shared rather than make a few people even richer. This can best be done by increasing the social wage rather than cutbacks. That means making the rich pay tax. Also needed is an immediate reduction in work hours. Technology has the ability to free us from work but it also has the ability to enslave us. Because of regressive government policies that are driven by the need to maximise profits we are instead being enslaved. To change this slide to absolute exploitation we need to change the political and economic system to one that serves our needs instead of that of our employers and investors. That is a whole new discussion but one that must take place in the workplace.
