As we mark the one year anniversary of the Auxiliary Police Officers Program, the Albemarle County Police Department is pleased to recognize the service of our Auxiliary Police Officers (APOs). Since graduating from the program last January, the six Level III APOs have worked 2,355.25 hours. Their time volunteering for the department equals a cost savings of $57,680.07. As reflected in the numbers, the APOs have worked well beyond the minimum requirement of ten hours per month. The officers have become an essential part of the police department and also the community. They volunteered for major events like the Foxfield Races and also provided additional assistance during the Hannah Graham search. On a weekly basis, they maintain the House Check Program, ensuring vacant homes are secure. The APOs assist with our Crime Prevention efforts and other administrative needs. Their work alleviates part of the burden on patrol officers, allowing them to respond to other calls for service. In addition to the initial 50 hours of mandated training, the APOs have continued to train and advance in their positions. These men are committed to their service and are a true asset to the police department and the citizens of Albemarle County. The ACPD will be holding an awards and recognition ceremony to honor their service on Wednesday, January 14th.
