As written by my favorite student who is 10 years old: Im so Newark Im so Newark that I am afraid to go outside, so I wont see the guns that lie in peoples hands. The cocaine that people sniff everyday, the words that people say. The fact is that blood runs through my street like children at Chuck E Cheese. Why cant there be peace? Dont you see, people from the outside look in and all they see is the bad that lies within. When the facts are that there is good too, such as Quaye Institute of the Arts, North Star, Rise Academy, Team Charter Schools. What about the people who work to make us better? My 6th grade math teacher told me that talk does not cook rice. That I am the change. I am developing into a young woman but my back is still against the wall of poverty, homelessness, violence, and more but still I rise. I am fighting to grab hold of my future, to push myself into college. Newark has to change and I have to do it. This city showed me how to take my education seriously and now all the bad things give me an urge to fix it. A good person can make a big difference. Yet again, Im from Newark and all people see is the bad in me.
