Astor Court is a Beaux-Art public complex nestled in the heart of the Bronx Zoo. Completed in 1910, the site includes a 100-yard central promenade with two grand stairways, landscaped terraces, and a sea-lion pool. It is also home to six neo-classical buildings designed by Heins & LaFarge. Four of these structures feature life-like stone sculptures and rich terra cotta ornamentation representing the wildlife that once occupied each building. Notable creatures include reptiles, primates, birds, elephants, and lions. Though these animals have moved on to larger habitats, their landmark protected homestead still functions as a center for information, education, and special events.
