Asylum seekers on Christmas Island are more depressed, scared and anxious than those being housed in the worlds second-largest refugee camp, says Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young. Now lets just analyse this statement. Take all the time you need. Now, lets draw comparisons. The Zaatari refugee camp is a tent city that houses more than 120,000 refugees from war-torn Syria. Besides the battle to deliver the simple demands for shelter, electricity, water, and health care, humanitarian workers also struggle to provide education for the 60,000 children under 18. Now lets look at Christmas Island. A tropical paradise in the north east Indian Ocean. To anyone who was fortunate enough to visit the island it is truly a tropical gem. The arrangements at Christmas Island Detention centres for illegal boat arrivals consist of permanent and temporary demountable, purpose-built facilities including accommodation compounds, a medical centre (including first-aid rooms), a commercial kitchen, laundry and educational and recreational facilities. It also has a range of sporting facilities. All provided free of charge courtesy of the Australian Tax Payer and quite frankly are light years ahead of what any detention facility can provide in the world. Rarely does the combined population of the facilities on Christmas Island exceed 1,000 and if anything the population is decreasing. Oh and on a final note; Sarah, this is an immigration detention centre. Not a refugee camp. There are polar differences that you are yet or ever will comprehend.
