At 10h30 this morning I left Johannesburg with Eric Mokua. arrived in Burghersfort at 16h00. We will spend the rest of the week in Sekhukuneland working with communities impacted by Platinum Mining. The final report will be called Life Before, During and After Mining. The study will attempt a longitudinal view to determine the social, cultural, material/economic, moral and spiritual cost of mining to mine impacted communities. To do this we will engage with youth on Youth Day, that is June 16, with traditional leaders, and ordinary people for the rest of the week. Hoping to return to Johannesburg on Friday. We will be recoding our engagement with members of the community individually and in focus group discussions. Local monitors will assist in the process. The people of Sekhukuneland have a proud history of struggle, first against the Boers of the Transvaal Republic, later against British Colonialism, and as recently as 1958 an uprising against Apartheid. Now the struggle is against Multinational Mining Corporations pushing them off their land to make way for mining.
